Growing older is a fact of life, but just as makeup can help to mask fine lines and wrinkles, a well executed haircut can have a similar effect in lifting and smoothing the face for a younger looking appearance. Drawing the eye away from natural signs of aging, a good haircut can remove years from your complexion, allowing you to look and feel confident knowing that you have the best cut to compliment your features. We spoke with hair stylist Samantha Gradilone of Fabio Scalia Salons to get her take on the three best haircuts for hiding your age, and you’re going to want to try these immediately.
Blunt Bob
If you’re ready to make the chop, a bob haircut is one of the best for accentuating the jawline and drawing the eye upward, lifting the face. “A blunt bob with texturized ends is a one length haircut ranging anywhere between the collarbone to the jawline. Texturizing ends is a great way to create movement,” explains Gradilone. This cut also provides fullness around the face, increasing the volume in your hair and diverting attention from any sagging skin around the neck. “When talking to your stylist, ask for short face framing with lots of texture. And be sure that it’s fun and flow-y,” she suggests.
Curtain Bangs
Far from the blunt bangs you may initially think of, curtain bangs are a great way to frame the face and create soft layers which can accentuate your cheekbones and enhance your appearance. “A curtain bang is a fresh and modern way to get that youthful look again,” says Gradilone. “They are a middle part bang that swoops to each side starting shorter in the middle and gradually gets longer towards the chin and jawline.” This cut is ideal for masking fine lines and crows feet that may be developing around the eyes, and can also offer a boost of volume, especially in combination with a bob.
Modern Day Shag
The shag haircut has become increasingly popular over the last several months among celebs, and fortunately it’s also a great cut for anti-aging purposes, as well with the volume it provides. “It has tons of movement and layers mainly in the face frame area. Compared to old school shags which have a lot of movement and layers throughout the whole head, today we like to maintain the density in the back and have a lot of movement in the front,” Gradilone notes. This helps to create a younger looking appearance by framing the face and creating a fullness which can be associated with youth. Try pairing your shag cut with curtain bangs for another great look with plenty of volume.
