Choosing the right hairstyle for your face is difficult enough as it is, but when you factor in wanting a style that’s anti aging, there are a whole new set of variables to consider. While there are some styles, like a bob or a pixie cut, which are universally flattering as you grow older, some cuts and styles can emphasize the wrong features and make your age more pronounced. If you’re tired of your hair but don’t want to make yourself look older, these are the four hairstyles to avoid the next time you’re at the salon.
Frizzy & Air Dried
Sometimes you’re in a rush and don’t have the time to blow dry your hair after the shower. However, this look can quickly go from effortless to aged in no time. “Avoid the frizzy, air dried finished look. This may have been cool and bohemian years ago, but can age you and make you look unkempt over 40,” says George Papanikolas, Matrix Brand Ambassador. “Opt for a polished bob cut, or use a serum like Matrix Total Results Mega Sleek Bega Varnish to reduce frizz and provide high shine as it controls rebellious, unruly hair.”
Too Much Length
Long hair can be stunning at any age, but sometimes the weight of the strands can become too much and they may drag down your face, making you look older. “Over 40 doesn’t mean you have to cut your hair short but be sure to include face framing layers if you’re going to wear it longer. The movement in volume will make it more youthful,” says Papanikolas.
Thin Bangs
Bangs are back in style this year and are especially great for hiding forehead wrinkles as you age. However, bangs that are too thin can reveal more than you would like. “Many women over 40 cut bangs to camouflage wrinkles in their forehead, but too skinny of bangs that are see-through can be aging. If you’re going to cut bangs, make sure you go far back enough to give you enough thickness, otherwise opt for face framing bangs which are universally more flattering,” warns Papanikolas.
Overdone Highlights
Highlights are a chic and youthful touch to add to your hair, but using them to hide existing grays will only aggravate the issue. “Highlights should be used as an accent to your hair, using them to camouflage grey can overprocess the hair, resulting in dry over-processed hair, and an overly bleached out look,” says Papanikolas. “Instead opt for a monthly single process color to cover grey, and get highlights every three months. Be sure to hydrate the hair to keep it moisturized and glossy with Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Tasking Hair Mask.”
