The 'Harsh' Skincare Mistakes To Never Make Over 40 Because They Lead To 'Accelerated Aging,' Fine Lines, And Damaged Skin Barrier

When we think about the biggest skincare mistakes we make, not washing off our makeup or neglecting steps in our routine may be way up there. But it isn’t just about what you neglect; the “harsh” steps you do take can affect your skin in negative ways, as well.

According to Dr. Hee Jin Kim, a dermatologist at Pureeen MD, three things you’re either doing too much of or not doing enough can cause damage to your skin and may even impact your health (because taking care of your skin isn’t just about looking great). You can get right these wrongs easily, which is the upside to this, but it will start with knowing which products and routines to put the brakes on, and which to improve upon.

1. Over-Exfoliating

Somewhere along the way, we were told to exfoliate all of the time and never look back. While exfoliation is truly important to rid your skin of dead cells and showcase smooth, hydrated skin underneath, too much of a good thing applies when it comes to this skincare step. “Avoid harsh exfoliants and excessive scrubbing, as they can damage your skin barrier. Stick to gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week to maintain a healthy glow.”

Product recommendations include Skinceuticals Glycolic Acid and Paula’s Choice AHA.

2. Skipping Sunscreen

If you’re only going to invest in one skincare product that will effectively help combat signs of aging, sunscreen should be it. SPF fends off UVA and UVB rays that are the cause of most skin damage, including hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. And you’re probably not applying it as much as you should. “Even indoors, sunscreen is essential! UV rays, especially UVA, can penetrate clouds and windows, leading to premature aging. Make sunscreen a daily habit.”

Some products she loves include Lifesaver by Dr. David Kim and Pavise.

3. Neglecting Hydration

Keeping your skin well hydrated is the key to improving the way it looks and feels — and this means hydrating it from the inside with plenty of water and the outside, by using moisturizers with effective ingredients.

“Dehydrated skin = fine lines! Not using enough hydration and barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides can accelerate skin aging. Keep your skin plump and protected!”

Some product favorites for hydration include Dr. Jart Ceramide Cream and Skinceuticals Triple Liquid.
