McDonald’s announced earlier this week that it has no plans of making its menu any healthier, so your best bet is to learn nutritionist-approved tips for navigating its existing menu. If you’re watching what you eat, nutritionists agree that these sandwich orders are unexpectedly healthy and therefore should be what you choose when visiting the fast food chain. Without further ado:

For Breakfast: The Egg McMuffin

Simplicity is key when navigating the McDonald’s menu, and their most simple sandwiches are the healthiest.

“One of the best choices comes from the breakfast menu at McDonalds,” Garret Seacat, CSCS, of Absolute Endurance tells us.

“The Egg McMuffin is one of the better choices when it comes to having to get a sandwich on the go from McDonalds. With a low 310 calories, high 17 grams of protein, and a decent 30 grams of carbs it is a relatively great choice for fueling when you can’t eat at home.” Good to know!

For Lunch & Dinner: The Chicken Sandwich, No Bun

Sadly, McDonald’s is no longer selling grilled chicken options and you can only get breaded ones, but nutritionist Heather Hanks, MS, tell us that ordering the chicken sandwich and removing the bun is still your best bet over the hamburger options.

“I would order the Deluxe Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which contains 530 calories, 26 grams of fat, 47 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, and 27 grams of protein,” she explains.

“This is the only sandwich I see that contains some vegetables, and if you order it without the bun, the sandwich will contain 360 calories, 24 grams of fat, 15 grams of carbs, and 20 grams of protein. Keeping the carbs and calories down – but maintaining a good amount of protein – will help fill you up until your next meal without wrecking too much havoc on your diet.” Good tip!
