Sweeteners are a common part of many diets, from traditional sugars to artificial alternatives. While refined sugars and certain artificial sweeteners have been linked to negative health effects like blood sugar spikes, weight gain, and even long-term health risks, there are healthier options available that are “unrefined” and have a “lower glycemic index.”

Kyle Fitzgerald, a clean eating advocate, recently shared his go-to healthy sugars you should buy next time you’re at the grocery store. According to him, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and honey are the best choices. Read on to get all his insights!
1. Maple Syrup
Maple syrup is a natural sweetener derived from the sap of maple trees and is considered a healthier alternative to refined sugar. Unlike processed sugar, maple syrup contains essential nutrients like manganese, zinc, and antioxidants.
“This is loaded with antioxidants, and it's unrefined. Just make sure you go for one that’s 100% pure maple syrup instead of the fake stuff that’s loaded with corn syrup,” he notes.
2. Coconut sugar
Coconut sugar retains trace amounts of nutrients like iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium, along with antioxidants, making it a more nutrient-dense option.
“This contains minerals and has a much lower glycemic index than regular cane sugar,” Fitzgerald adds.
3. Honey
Honey has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, making it a common remedy for soothing sore throats and boosting immunity. Additionally, it has a slightly lower glycemic index than sugar, leading to more stable blood sugar levels.
"This is naturally high in enzymes, vitamins, and minerals,” he notes. “But just make sure to go for one that’s raw and unfiltered.”
