Getting perfect waves is time consuming and can be pricey depending on how thick your hair is, what products you use, and what your hair’s texture is. And you may think that curls require heat, especially if you want lasting volume. But, using heat on your hair regularly can weaken your hair, and diminish any of your natural volume, making it harder to get the result that you want from curling in the first place.

“Using heat regularly on your hair can damage the hair follicle and the shape of your hair’s keratin strands,” says Amber Fillerup Clark, hair stylist, influencer, and founder of Dae, “Every hair type can benefit from a heat protectant to ensure no further breakage or damage is done to the hair follicle when heat is used to style your hair. And of course, the best way to keep hair healthy and damage-free is to go an extra day in between washes and use heatless or air dry techniques!” We asked Clark to share her favorite heatless techniques for getting voluminous curls that won’t fall flat halfway through the day.

Wet hair in a bun overnight. Pulling your hair up in a bun overnight while wet will allow it to dry with volume and a slight wave. Clark also recommends accompanying this technique with dae’s new Cactus Fruit 3-in-1 styling cream. “It is an incredible multi-tasking formula (clean, vegan, and cruelty-free) to create smooth, slick styles.

Doing a moisture mask. Making sure there’s lots of moisture in your hair is another great way to encourage volume in your hair, especially if you have a little bit of natural curl that you struggle with maintaining. “Another amazing Dae product for air drying and achieving voluminous curls without heat is our Monsoon Moisture Mask—after leaving it in wet hair for 20 minutes, rinse it clean with cool water. Then air dry, and it leaves hair so soft, shiny and frizz-free.” Clark says.

Even though laying off of heat and products can help give hair a rest, you shouldn’t feel excluded from giving yourself a glam blowout just because your hair is thinning. Claire says it’s important to follow these five steps for a healthier blowout:

1. Gently wrap a micro-fibre hair towel around wet hair and gently squeeze to absorb excess water
2. Using a flexible-toothed comb, distribute a leave-in conditioner/thermal protector and other desired products (avoid silicones which can be too heavy for thinning hair)
3. Blow dry with your wide nozzle or diffuser upside down which helps to create lift and volume
4. For curly hair, avoid brushing and stick with a diffuser using a medium air flow and low heat.
 5. For straight hair, use a round brush on 85% dried hair and with straight sections, aim the the dryer with the nozzle parallel to the brush, up into the roots which helps with lift.  Medium air flow and heat will depend on the shape you want to lock in.
