Here’s Why Tech Experts Say You Should Never Use Your iPhone While It’s Charging–Oops!

It can be so hard to practice patience when you need to use your phone (like, right this very minute) and yet its battery is demanding to be charged at the exact same time. What’s the harm in picking up your device while it’s on its charger and sending a few texts — or finishing some work (or simply checking Instagram)? It may seem like an innocent enough action, but sometimes the damage that you’re doing to your phone is long-term. Without realizing it, you could be contributing to the degradation of your phone’s battery and a less effective, less speedy device. If you’ve ever wondered if there was truth to the rumor that you shouldn’t use your iPhone while it’s charging, here’s why tech experts say it’s a terrible idea.
You’re taxing your phone in many waysNo one likes to work overtime – and neither does your iPhone, says Patricio Paucar, co-founder of Navi. “If you can avoid using your phone while charging it at the same time, this is ideal,” Paucar confirms. “Essentially, you’re asking your phone to do double duty, and it’s possible it could cause your phone to overheat. The reason this can happen is due to the lithium-ion battery heating up when it’s overworked, and this can make your battery less effective over time.”
Even if your iPhone doesn’t overheat or experience any battery damage, Paucar says you should know that using it while it’s plugged in can cause it to charge slower, especially if you’re doing things like streaming video. “If you want the best performance from your iPhone, take the safe route, and avoid using it while it’s charging,” he says.
Using our phone while charging can also slow down the charging process, causing inconvenience and frustration, according to Jonathan Brax, the founder of Techable.com and Sellmac.com. “Power is diverted to run apps, which means your phone takes longer to reach a full charge,” Brax says. “Finally, using your phone while it’s charging puts you at a higher risk of electrical shock. Non-certified chargers or damaged cables are safety hazards that should be avoided.”
Not only does using your iPhone while it’s charging cause these issues, but it can also lead to other problems like reducing performance, causing apps to slow down or freeze. “It can lead to screen burn-in if the screen is kept on for long periods, and it can shorten the lifespan of other components,” Brax adds. “It’s best to avoid using your iPhone while it’s charging to prolong its lifespan and ensure your safety. Wait for it to charge fully before using it, or take a break and let it charge uninterrupted. Taking these steps will help keep your phone healthy and functioning at its best for longer.”
