If you’re struggling with thinning hair and aren’t sure which way to turn when it comes to haircuts and hairstyles, Professional Hair Stylist Justin Hickox has the best news: he is here to give us the gift of five “game-changing” hairstyles that he says will “instantly” make thinning hair look thicker.

Contrary to the typical bobs you’ll see recommended here, there, and everywhere (and no love lost for the bob because it’s a great cut), Hickox thinks outside the box here to bring you some styles you may not have previously attempted. He explains why the haircut and style works beautifully for thinning hair. Here are five to consider so that you can finally start embracing and loving your hair.

1. Long One-Length With Bangs

First of all, long isn’t what you think is long (which could be all the way down the back). Long for you is wherever your hair begins getting straggly and stringy. That’s where your stylist should cut, keeping the ends blunt for a fuller look. A lot of people start to thin around the crown, which is why bangs work so well. They cover the area of sparseness and add an illusion of fullness. Your stylist may need to take more hair from the back to create the bang you want, but keep in mind you don’t need super-thick bangs for this to work.

2. Medium Cut With Front Layers

Layering in the front of a medium cut (to about the shoulder or slightly above or below it) can make thinning hair look so much thicker. Getting a “strong” line with front layers and adding a bend and texture to it is the key to getting your hair to appear more voluminous.

3. Shoulder Length With Layers

Because you’re going shorter with length here, you have more freedom to create volume and shape with more layering. The reason more layering works with this cut (and doesn’t look as good with long hair) is because the length doesn’t extend beyond the shoulder. It’s important, however, not to over-layer your hair or make it choppy.

4. Chin-Length Bob With Nape Layering

A chin-length bob automatically brings the eye up, making it appear like there is more fullness in the hair. When layering is concentrated at the nape, it creates the illusion of more volume in the back — but what works beautifully is keeping your line stronger in the front, and perhaps slightly longer than in the back. Pro tip: if your ends start to look thinner, adding a wave can help.

5. Pixie/Bixie

The shorter your hair is, the thicker it will look. And if you are noticing thinness at the scalp as opposed to the ends, a pixie or bixie haircut can fill in those areas at the scalp and create more fullness. Another area to focus on that often goes forgotten is the sides of the hair, by the ears, which can look thinnest. Cutting it with strong ends can make your hair look denser. Another tip with this cut is to style the top toward the front of your head for a thicker look.
