Brain health is a vital part of overall well-being, influencing everything from memory and focus to mood and cognitive function. While many people turn to supplements to support their brain—such as vitamins, omega-3s, or herbal boosters—not all supplements are created equal. In fact, taking certain supplements in high doses can actually harm brain health, potentially leading to issues like brain fog, anxiety, or even increased risk of cognitive decline over time.

Neuroscientist Dr. Robert Love recently revealed three supplements you should take with caution if you want to avoid cognitive issues. According to him, high levels of iron, copper, and manganese are the ones that can “hurt your brain.” Read on to learn more.

1. Iron

Love says a lot of people think they should take iron, but many don’t need to. “High levels of iron can lead to memory loss as well as loss of cognition,” he says. In addition, excessive amounts of iron can lead to increased aging. He advises that unless a blood test has confirmed low iron levels, it's best to avoid taking an iron supplement.

2. Copper

Love reveals that “high levels of copper actually increase free radicals,” which can cause oxidative stress and “damage” to your brain. To counteract this, he recommends taking zinc instead because that will curb the free radicals and “help protect your brain.” Noted!

3. Manganese

While manganese is an essential mineral that supports bone development, metabolism, and brain function in small amounts, too much can lead to neurotoxicity.

High levels of manganese could lead to Parkinson’s like symptoms, Love notes, such as tremors. “According to the NIH, the upper limit for manganese is 11 milligrams a day for healthy adults,” adding that you should try to stay well below that level.
