When you’re trying to lose weight, the best thing you can do is exercise regularly. And the second best thing you can do is cook your own meals to control exactly what ingredients you’re taking into your body. Cooking at home allows you to monitor the levels of sodium, fat and sugars that are used in your food. Plus, you get full control in what your food tastes like.
But there is a common sauce you might be cooking with that is high in sodium and slowly destroying your metabolism.
Honey barbecue sauce is a popular favorite cooking condiment because it instantly intensifies the flavor of your food. But the problem with this is that most brands of barbecue sauce make their products with as much as 300 milligrams of sodium per a two-tablespoon serving. This is 23% of your daily recommended intake, which the American Heart Association says is 1,300 milligrams.
If you pay attention to the barbecue sauce you buy, you can find an option with less sodium than normal. For example a bottle of Annie’s Organic Barbecue Sauce contains 200 milligrams of sodium in each two-tablespoon serving. This is less than most barbecue sauce bottles, yet still 15% of your daily recommended intake.
If you really enjoy the flavor of a good barbecue sauce when you’re cooking, there is a way to incorporate it without taking in unnecessary amounts of sodium. Instead of using store bought sauces, make your own sauce from scratch. This way, you can have the flavors you like but control the amount of sodium you’re eating.
