After several years in which a more extreme makeup look dominated Instagram and makeup tutorials, many beauty lovers seem ready to hang up their contour makeup, foundation, and highlighters and opt instead for a more minimal routine. But shedding products and steps in your routine doesn’t mean having any less of a desire to make certain features — like your cheekbones — stand out and pop. Here’s some good news if you’ve already tossed that contour kit that was made up of no fewer than five shades: you can sculpt your cheekbones using just a few products, including your trusty concealer.

Gone are the days when concealer was strictly used for under-eye discoloration and to hide zits. This multitasking wonder product can also be magic when you’re trying to bring out definition in your bone structure. Makeup Artist Erica Taylor shares her favorite tips (and products) that can give you sculpted cheekbones without the need to bulk up on every makeup tool and formula at Sephora. Save money, shave minutes off your morning makeup routine, and look fabulous all at the same time.

Think About Light & Shadows

The art of sculpting cheekbones with makeup is a play on light and shadows, Taylor stresses. “It’s creating the lines to take the eyes where you want them to go,” she explained. “By brightening or highlighting higher points of the cheekbone we are able to create volume and lift.”

Taylor agrees that we are seeing a movement where the contour is less visible but the highlight via concealer is doing the shaping. “It is basically invisible contour,” Taylor said. “This is not entirely new.  I have been a professional makeup trainer with cosmetics brands for 27 years and we see trends return but in a fun modern way — just like fashion.”

How To Create Sculpted Cheekbones

“Go under the hollows of your jaw from lip corner to ear and properly blend [to] enhanced a lifted cheek,” Taylor said. “To keep this everyday wearable, I suggest a brightening concealer like Rare Beauty Positive Light for a subtle lift or Dior Backstage that is luminous and easy to blend.”

Next, you would pull up the cheekbone starting in the center of the cheek going over the high point on a diagonal up to the temple to pull lines up and out to create dimension, Taylor says. “You would add a sheer blush to the highest part of the cheek of the apple and pull up towards the temple marrying into concealer. Of course we can create more dimension by adding contour in the cheek bone and slightly blending above for lift.  My current go to for my clients in Merit Bronzing Balm because it is a sheer contour that is very forgiving for the non- makeup artists.”
