As we get older, winter’s unforgiving impact on our skin can leave it looking dull and parched. To address this issue, women aged 40 and above should maintain a nourishing diet, stay hydrated, establish a consistent sleep routine, and utilize skincare products that suit their specific skin type.

Individuals with naturally dry skin will often benefit from using a hydrating moisturizer regularly, particularly in the colder months. Seeking advice from dermatologists and skincare experts, we have identified two timeless and efficient moisturizers to help you achieve smooth and youthful-looking skin this winter, in case you are uncertain where to start.

Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Dr. Anna Chacon, MD, board-certified dermatologist and writer at My Psoriasis Team and Dr. Jenelle Kim, skincare formulator and founder of JBK Wellness Labs.

2 Hydrating Anti-Aging Moisturizers For Women Over 40, According To The Pros

1. Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer

This moisturizer (which you can find on the brand site, Ulta or Target with prices ranging from $27.49 to $36.99) is known for its anti-aging properties, Kim says, and it contains niacinamide, amino-peptides, and hyaluronic acid. "These ingredients help moisturize, firm the skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," she adds.

Kim notes that ceramides "help strengthen the skin barrier, leading to improved hydration and a smoother texture." Chacon explains that hyaluronic acid helps "replenish and lock in moisture" to the skin. "Hyaluronic acid is also generally safe for all skin types," she stresses. "It rarely has adverse skin reactions as it is a natural substance in the skin."

2. Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream

This "thick, creamy moisturizer" is a "popular beauty pick" in French pharmacies, Chacon says, and can also be found at stores like Ulta and Walgreens.

"Its soothing properties aid in the restoration and rebalancing of dry skin," she explains, while also noting that its ingredients "prevent skin water evaporation by strengthening cell cohesion."

Chacon notes that its ingredients like glycerin, zinc and beeswax can help "remove dehydration lines." In addition, this moisturizer is also made with shea butter, an inclusion that Chacon says "helps to reduce signs of aging, dryness, and dehydration."

The Bottom Line

Overall, for dry skin over 40, Chacon stresses that a cream moisturizer like these will be the "best choice" because its "thickness means it will feel relatively heavy on the skin, and will take longer to dry."

In addition, she recommends always choosing a "fragrance-free moisturizer that is free of parabens and irritants" this winter. The more you know!
