In the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, every little tweak counts. For many, starting the day with a steaming cup of coffee is non-negotiable. But the unfortunate truth is that many of the most popular coffee add-ins can take a toll on your health when consumed in excess. Luckily, there are some great options out there, too, including a few anti-inflammatory spices.

What if you could elevate that morning ritual into a powerhouse of health benefits? Adding the right spices to the mix could do just that. We consulted nutrition coach and personal trainer Alanna Kate Derrick to discover some of the best options. Find all of her expert insight below.

cinnamon

1. Cinnamon

"Cinnamon is one powerhouse I always have on hand," Derrick enthuses. "Beyond lending that comforting warmth, cinnamon has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels after meals and exercise." She emphasizes the importance of stable energy levels throughout the day, noting that "keeping levels stable can aid weight maintenance by preventing energy dips and cravings." Derrick also adds that, as a busy mom on the go, "having a little cinnamon in my coffee provides an easy guardrail."

ginger

2. Ginger

"Ginger is another staple for me, especially after intense training sessions," Derrick shares. "This zesty root has long been used as a digestive aid to reduce bloating, gas, and nausea—major plusses when you're really pushing your body's limits." She emphasizes ginger's anti-inflammatory properties, noting that they "provide an extra perk for soothing gut irritation too." Just a quick grate or thinly sliced piece into you brew, Derrick assures, does the trick. Try ginger tea, too!

turmeric

3. Turmeric

Next up, turmeric is a delicious, earthy spice that can also work wonders on your body. Derrick calls turmeric an "anti-inflammatory rockstar" thanks to its curcumin content. "Getting that preemptive boost first thing may help counteract excess inflammation that can drive weight gain, particularly around the midsection." Derrick's enthusiasm for turmeric extends to its flavor profile as well, asserting that "that earthy turmeric flavor pairs so nicely with coffee's richness."

black pepper

4. Black pepper

Black pepper contains piperine, an active compound that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and enhances the absorption of other beneficial compounds like curcumin. Board certified physician Linda Khosaba adds, "It may stimulate digestion and improve nutrient absorption." Although it may seem strange to add it to you coffee, it could be worth a shot.

cardamom

5. Cardamom

According to Derrick, cardamom is "believed to provide a metabolism kick and enhanced nutrient absorption respectively." While acknowledging that evidence for these benefits might be more anecdotal, Derrick encourages experimentation. "Trying new spice combinations can be an easy way to add some variety to your morning coffee routine while potentially boosting health and energy levels," she adds.

Bottom line

Ultimately, when combined with other healthy habits, making small tweaks like adding inflammation-fighting spices to your coffee can make a difference in your health. Whether you're aiming for a flatter belly, a healthier gut, or better digestion, these spices offer a natural solution. So why not embrace the warmth of cinnamon, the zest of ginger, and the earthiness of turmeric?
