Oats are a nutritious breakfast option, providing a steady source of complex carbohydrates and fiber that promotes steady energy throughout the day. But beyond their basic benefits, oats can also play a role in boosting brain health and reducing brain fog, particularly for individuals over 40.

Adding certain ingredients to your oats can enhance cognitive function, improve focus, and sharpen memory.

We checked in with Krutika Nanavati, dietitian; Lauren Thayer, registered nurse; and Dr. Joanette Weisse, MD; who told us that antioxidant-rich blueberries and cinnamon make two of the healthiest options for your morning bowl of oats. 1. Blueberries

Berries, especially blueberries, are some of the best superfoods for your overall health. These fiber-rich fruits are small but mighty, packing in so many health benefits.

"Blueberries have a very high concentration of antioxidants," Thayer explains. "This helps to balance the amount of free radicals and counteract oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress has been proven to speed up the aging process of the brain and results in poor brain functioning."

Nanavati seconds this, noting that blueberries have been found to improve cognition and memory in multiple studies. "As we age, our brain naturally starts to decline, resulting in cognitive impairments such as memory loss and decreased executive function. However, the antioxidants in blueberries can help protect against this decline by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation," she says.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the tastiest spices around, offering a dash of sweetness in place of unhealthy refined sugar. It's also great for your brain! Dr. Joanette cites cinnamaldehyde, the active compound in cinnamon, as a scientifically proven substance supporting brain function. She notes, "Cinnamaldehyde is a naturally occurring component in cinnamon that has been found to enhance memory and improve focus."

"Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on your morning oatmeal and give your brain a flavorful boost," she advises. Beyond its delightful taste, cinnamon's prowess in memory enhancement makes it a simple yet potent addition to daily breakfast rituals.
