When picking out your breakfast, you want to make sure that whatever you choose will keep you full throughout the morning and give you a burst of energy to start your day.
Unfortunately, some breakfast foods can do the opposite–especially if they contain added sugars. With that in mind, keep reading for the unexpected breakfast food that you should avoid because it causes energy crashes all day.
Instant Oatmeal Packets
Oatmeal is commonly seen as a healthy breakfast option, and, if you make it right, it definitely can be.
Unfortunately, some of the most convenient ways to cook this breakfast actually make it less healthy. Specifically, flavored instant oatmeal packets can be full of added sugar and artificial flavors.
According to Cheat Sheet, "While convenient, flavored instant oatmeal packets are full of added, unnecessary sugars. These processed oats ... are extra sugary and have plenty of additives. This knocks a classic breakfast staple right off of its 'health pedestal,' and sets you up for an energy crash midday."
Avoiding high sugar breakfasts is a good way to prevent a potential energy crash later.
So if you are opting for oatmeal in the morning, make sure to keep an eye on any added ingredients that might be in instant packets--or try making it yourself, so you can control exactly what you'll be eating.
Another surprising breakfast staple that could lead to an energy crash? Coffee.
According to Eat This, Not That!, "If you keep turning to coffee for that burst of energy (thanks to the caffeine), it—as you already learned—messes with your sleep schedule, so you'll wake up feeling more tired. This then continues the cycle, and you'll end up feeling less energized throughout the day."
