Whether you have an iPhone or Android, the fear is the same: one day that expensive device you invested in could check out for the last time, leaving you in the lurch and scrambling to buy a new device. And, of course, unless you’ve been faithfully backing up your data, there’s the fear that you will lose important data and have to start over when you purchase your new device.

Knowing which red flags to keep on your radar can help you spot problems with your phone before they intensify and possibly lead to their demise. Your iPhone or Android could be on its last leg — here are two red flags that can serve as warning signs so you can back up your data or start shopping for a new phone ASAP.

1. Battery Drainage

Of course: your phone’s battery should drain as you use it. But if you’re regularly charging your device, using it for just a little bit of time, and then noticing that its battery rapidly drains from 100 percent to 20 percent before you’ve had a chance to even put it to work, something is wrong. Rapid battery drainage is a sign that your phone’s battery is degrading. Over time, your battery will stall more when it’s supposed to be charging and could eventually clock out.

2. Shuts Down at Random Times

You’re moving along nicely through your day, phone in hand when needed, and suddenly your phone just shuts down without explanation. What could be behind this? Unfortunately, the answer might be that your phone’s battery is starting to degrade or you have a hardware issue that needs to be addressed. Consider replacing your battery or finding out the source of your hardware problems and fixing them. If your phone is old or too far gone, this may be a sign that a better investment is upgrading your device.
