If you’re constantly charging your iPhone, only to find it barely makes a dent in your battery power, the problem could be that you aren’t powering up your device the right way.

This may sound absurd at first — how difficult can it be to charge your phone, right? But there are plenty of mistakes you could be making with your phone charging without knowing it. And these mistakes can be “so bad for your iPhone battery,” says Tech Expert Aaron Rian. Here are some of the most common iPhone charging mishaps and how to fix them so that your device’s battery holds a charge better.

1. Using Non-MFI-Certified Charging Accessories

No matter how much of a bargain they are, avoid using non-MFI-certified accessories like charging cables. These accessories are not designed to deliver the exact charge your phone requires. As a result, they can cause a too-fast charge that heats up your battery (which is very bad for its lifespan) or, conversely, a too-slow charge that is ineffective. Either purchase apple-certified accessories or accessories sold directly by Apple.

2. Using Your Phone While It’s Charging

If you use your phone while it is charging, it can overheat the device and slowly kill your battery. Try to keep your hands off of your phone while it’s plugged into a charger and wait until the charge is complete before using it.

3. Charging Your Phone in Direct Sunlight

Charging your iPhone in direct sunlight heats up the device, and extreme temperatures are one of the major killers of your phone’s battery. Be careful about powering up your phone in a hot car or near a window where sunlight could stream in and heat up your phone. Only charge your phone in room temperature spaces and away from direct sunlight.
