Presenting on live television every single day is no easy task and can sometimes lead to awkward mistakes – something which the Today co-hosts know all too well!
Co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb welcomed singer Mary J. Blige onto Today with Hoda & Jenna on Wednesday, March 6th; but Jenna made an awkward mistake when talking about the 30th anniversary of her album My Life, which was released on November 29th, 1994.
Jenna, 42, made the blunder when talking to the 53-year-old “No More Drama” singer about her album My Life, seemingly confusing it with her first album What’s The 411? which was released on July 28th, 1992.
An Awkward Moment On ‘Today With Hoda & Jenna’
“We have to talk about the fact that your debut album just turned 30,” the Read With Jenna founder began. The “I’m Goin’ Down” hitmaker didn’t waste any time in correcting the mother-of-three, and replied: “Well, that’s the second one. What’s the 411? was the first.”
Ever the professional, Jenna didn’t let the mistake knock her confidence and continued with the show. “Oh okay, your second album! Your second album! You’re right!” Jenna exclaimed. She then looked at her friend and co-host Hoda, and confessed: “We Googled it because we were like, ‘It can’t be 30 years old.'”
That wasn't the only mistake on the show, as Hoda, 59, previously wrongly said that the nine-time Grammy winner had received a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame award, when that was in fact not true.
"Well it's not even an award, I'm nominated,' Mary told the mom-of-two. "It is an award because of the company that I'm in," she continued, adding: "I am nominated with Lenny Kravitz, Cher, Sade, Mariah Carey, Run-D.M.C... I mean, all these iconic people, you know, and me."
Mary J. Blige Says She Is 'Not Going To Give Up On Love'
Also in the interview, the "Family Affair" singer opened up about what she was going through when she was writing her second album after Jenna noted: "You wrote about such important and also hard things."
"I mean, the My Life album was me just basically really crying for help and just wanting somebody to love me. And it was a point in my life where I was just looking for love in all the wrong places," Mary replied. She added: "But at the same time I wrote a song called "My Life" that relates to me right now today and scares the mess out of me because I'm like, 'how did I do that?' because life can be only what you make it."
The "Just Fine" musician then went on to say that she still believes in love, and is not giving up on finding it. "I am not going to give up on love. I am not going to let a bad relationship or bad marriage stop me from having a good life and having romance and getting the hugs that I want and desire," she confessed. "You know, I'm not going to say, 'I'm so hard,' no I want a man, I want love, I want it all and I am not going to let my past stop me from that. It's because I love myself like that I'm able to draw things to me and I'm able to receive love that I know I deserve."
Jenna then said, "That's so smart. Well, okay, so are you dating?" to which Mary simply replied, "Yep." Jenna and Hoda then laughed awkwardly as Mary didn't divulge any more information, with Hoda saying, "We got a yep!" Jenna added: "That's it! Let's leave it at yep!"
