After Jennifer Lopez delivered a killer and moving performance in the 2019 hit film Hustlers, many JLo fans (and probably a large majority of filmgoers who saw it) were shocked that she did not receive an Oscar nomination. In the upcoming documentary, Halftime, fans will be able to see the vulnerable, behind-the-scenes side of Lopez, as the project chronicles events that lead up to her iconic 2020 Super Bowl halftime show and 50th birthday. Last week, the “If You Had My Love” singer, 52, shared a trailer for Halftime with her 210 million Instagram followers and many expressed in her comment section that they were “moved” by her words in the clip.
In the trailer, Lopez is seen discussing her life in the spotlight, and the toll that negative comments took on her mental health. “I’ve lived in the public eye and I really believed a lot of what they said,” Lopez’s voice-over said as old interview clips and tabloid cover shots were shown. Then, Lopez is seen preparing for and experiencing the 2018-2019 awards season (when an Oscar nom was believed to be on its way.
“It was hard,” the Marry Me star says as she is seen crying in bed. “I just had a very low self-esteem. I had to really figure out who I was and believe in that, and not believe anything else.” She added, “My whole life, I’ve been battling to be heard. To be seen. To be taken seriously.” The trailer ends as the “On The Floor” singer says, “I really feel like my life is just beginning.”

The documentary will show rehearsal clips and confessionals from Lopez, as seen in the trailer, but also, moments with her now-fiance Ben Affleck, 49, as well. Fans in Lopez’s comments wrote that they are “excited to see” the film and a “different side to the badass” and “beloved triple-threat” as Lopez’s film will highlight her singing, dancing and acting efforts.
Halftime is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in Washington Heights on June 8th, and then available to stream on Netflix starting June 14th.
