Christmas Eve was not the joyous event for Jessie J that it should have been after she landed in the hospital with a diagnosis of Meniere’s disease. The 32-year-old singer made a lighthearted post to Instagram despite the circumstances, writing in her caption, “Today I…1. Went to the ear doctor and got told I have meniere syndrome.” Not the best Christmas present!

Jessie J took to her Instagram live, explaining to fans, “I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn’t walk in a straight line.” She went on to say, “I know that a lot of people suffer from it and I’ve actually had a lot of people reach out to me and give me great advice, so I’ve just been laying low in silence.”

According to Healthline, Meniere’s disease is, “a disorder that affects the inner ear. The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance. The condition causes vertigo, the sensation of spinning. It also leads to hearing problems and a ringing sound in the ear. Meniere’s disease usually affects only one ear.” While the ultimate cause is unknown, it could be due to changes in the fluid in the inner ear, allergies or simply genetics.

Thankfully, Jessie seems to be feeling better already, telling her Instagram live, “I’m glad I went early and they worked out what it was real quick and I got on the right medicine so I feel a lot better today. I haven’t sung for so long and when I sing loud, it sounds like there’s someone trying to run out of my ear.”

Fingers crossed that the diagnosis won’t permanently affect Jessie’s singing and she’ll be back making music soon. While it was likely frightening to experience vertigo and hearing loss, it’s promising that she’s feeling better with the right medication. We just feel bad that was how she spent the holidays!
