On November 12, Taylor Swift released her re-recorded version of the album Red (Taylor’s Version) alongside several new songs and a 10 minute version of ‘All Too Well,’ famously rumored to be about her ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal. With the new music, Swift fans took this as a call to action against the former boyfriends that have wronged the singer, with many people brutally targeting John Mayer on social media about his time with Swift. However, instead of accepting the barrage of comments on social media, Mayer directly responded to a fan, inquiring about the intention behind her message.

“f–k yourself you ugly bitch i hope you choke on something <3,” an aggressive Swift fan said after sliding into Mayer’s DM’s earlier this week as shown by screenshots from the Instagram account @deux.discusssions. The fan then doubled down on her message, following up with “answer me you bitch.”
It was then that Mayer sent out a lengthy response, writing, “Hi Alondra, it’s John. I’ve been getting so many messages like these the past couple of days. I decided to choose your message at random to reply to. You can feel free to screen shot, share in any way you like if you want. I’m not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?”

The fan then sent a shocked response to the 44-year-old singer, writing, “OMG WHAT i don’t want you to DIE,” accompanied by a lengthy voice note apology for the aggressive message. However the exchange didn’t stop there, and Mayer responded, saying, “It’s okay. I wanted to understand. So it’s a fun thing people are doing without taking into account that I might see it and be affected by it?”
The fan replied, “yeah, i guess nobody really thought you would see it or answer since you are famous and don’t interact with random people. again, very sorry !!” Mayer then responded that they were “100 percent okay,” completing the response with “Go forth and live happy and healthy!” with Alondra saying “just a warning that people are probably going to be 1000x meaner when speak now taylor’s version is released so take care of yourself.”
