Kacey Musgraves was completely naked when she performed on Saturday Night Live at the weekend, and we’re still not over it! We know that the majority of SNL is NSFW and should definitely be watched after the kids have gone to bed, but an entirely naked performance still took us by surprise! What a way to start the first episode of the 47th season!
The 33-year-old country music star was the first musical guest of the new season, and was completely naked behind her acoustic guitar – save for a pair of cowboy boots – when she was performing an emotional acoustic rendition of her song “Justified” from her fifth studio album, “Star-Crossed.” The Nashville songstress can be seen sitting on a stool with her guitar cleverly perched on her lap for the entirety of her performance, with the dim lighting also helping to preserve her modesty.
At first, we thought her nudity was just an illusion, created with the position of the guitar and the clever lighting, but since the performance that quite understandably got everyone talking, Musgraves' publicist has confirmed that the singer was indeed completely and entirely 100% naked. We can't believe it! "She was nude," her publicist confirmed to Variety. "Precautions were taken, and this was the first time it’s happened on the show." Her publicist also said that Musgraves was blocked from the audience by a sheet while the performance was being set up. Variety also noted that fans who attended the live taping took to Reddit to confirm that "people gathered around [Musgraves] with large towels to wrap her so [she] could stand and walk off the stage." Well, there's always a first time for everything!
For her second performance, which was to the song "Camera Roll," also from her latest album, Musgraves' outfit couldn’t have been more different to the first. She was actually wearing clothes for a start, which already makes a big change, and kept things casual in a cropped plaid flannel shirt and jeans. But as you can imagine, it was her barely-there outfit (or more accurately, lack of an outfit) for her first performance that got all the attention! We still can't believe she was allowed to go on looking like that – she must have set so many pulses racing!
According to Musgraves, her outfit (or lack thereof) for her first performance took inspiration from the 1994 classic film, Forrest Gump, where Robin Wright’s character, Jenny, can be seen performing completely naked behind her guitar. The singer shared a picture of the exact scene in the movie to her Twitter page on October 3rd, just in case there was any confusion about where the inspiration for her daring look came from.
The weekend's performance was Musgraves' second appearance on SNL, as she first appeared on the show back in 2018 when she was promoting her album, "Golden Hour." Musgraves has won six Grammys and seven CMAs so far, and now we're giving her our unofficial Raciest Performance Outfit Of All Time award.
