Apart from the now-viral fashion faux pas involving the green Solace London dress she wore to the Earthshot Prize Awards in November 2022 (she still looked phenomenal, may we add!) Kate Middleton seldom gets it wrong when it comes to her fashion choices.

But way back in 2016, the Princess of Wales, 41, nearly suffered an embarrassing wardrobe mishap when she and the Prince of Wales paid a visit to New Delhi’s India Gate war memorial, which the internet is once again talking about thanks to some resurfaced pictures and videos.

Kate Middleton Narrowly Avoids Having A 'Marilyn Moment' In New Delhi

If you cast your minds back to 2016, you may recall that the Duchess of Cambridge wore a stunning white Emilia Wickstead midi dress as she and her husband honored the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting for the British Army during the First World War. She looked breathtaking in the dress, which she teamed with elegant nude heels.

However, the mom-of-three evidently wasn’t prepared for the strong gusts of wind, as she narrowly avoided having her very own 'Marilyn moment' – in reference to the late Marilyn Monroe's white William Travilla dress rising up because of the wind from a subway grating in the movie, The Seven Year Itch. The Princess of Wales battled with the hemline of her dress as she bent down to lay a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial – but she handled it with pure class and dignity (are we surprised?) and managed to keep the dress from rising up too much, and therefore succeeded in preserving her modesty. What a pro!

How Does Kate Middleton Avoid Wardrobe Malfunctions?

Akin to many other female members of the royal family, the Princess of Wales has a lot of tricks up her sleeve to ensure she doesn’t suffer embarrassing wardrobe mishaps. Some of these include wearing bodysuits under outfits to create static in harsh winds to prevent skirts and dresses from flying up, and sewing weights into skirts – the late Queen Elizabeth II reportedly had her personal couturier Stewart Parvin sew lead curtain weights into her skirts – again, to avoid hemlines from rising. The Princess of Wales also has some of her items specially altered and adapted, which includes making them less revealing than their original designs.

Other tricks are simply to make her life a little easier, such as wearing shoes in a slightly bigger size to avoid blisters and wearing tights with rubber soles to stop the foot from sliding around in shoes – after all, tights are a must as bare legs do actually break royal protocol!
