TikTok is the gift that keeps on giving, as we get to appreciate little pieces of history that we either completely missed the first time around, or just simply forgot.

And the social media platform has once again delivered, as someone recently shared a throwback video of Kate Middleton strategically avoiding holding Tom Cruise‘s hand at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in Leicester Square on May 19th, 2022. It needs to be seen to be believed!

Kate Middleton Strategically Avoids Holding Tom Cruise’s Hand At ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Premiere

We remember that the Princess of Wales looked absolutely breathtaking in her monochrome off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret dress for the movie premiere, which she accessorized with a black Alexander McQueen clutch bag.

As per the TikTok video, the Mission: Impossible actor can be seen holding the mom-of-three’s hand on the red carpet – which as we know, is against royal protocol, as the Prince and Princess of Wales aren’t really supposed to hold hands in public! – to seemingly guide her along the red carpet.

However, the Princess of Wales appears to be somewhat uncomfortable with that – or at the very least, seems all too aware that it is indeed breaking royal protocol – so cleverly adjusts her clutch bag so she is holding it with both of hands, to avoid Cruise touching her hand again.

Fan Comments

As expected, the video garnered a lot of comments from royal fans! "William didn't seem that happy with that," observed one fan, followed by the crying laughing emoji.

"Poor Kate, between royals and scientology!" exclaimed another, as a third thought that Prince William was to blame for leaving his wife's side, writing: "Looks like your prince forgot his princess to me."

Many other TikTok users thought that the Interview with the Vampire actor didn't do anything wrong and was acting gentlemanly by offering a helping hand on the red carpet. "Please he is only being courteous," noted one fan. "He is a gentleman. Doesn't matter who could be next to him," concurred another, as someone else echoed: "I see no problem I see a gentleman helping a lady."
