Kate Copies Meghan With Coat Pairings; One-Shoulder Gowns
Perhaps the most obvious fashion doubling moment was in January 2022 with the Princess of Wales wearing a long camel coat from the brand Max & Co., styled incredibly similarly to how Meghan had done hers—with a brown turtleneck—going for the same vibe of a monochromatic, neutral look. The Duchess of Sussex had worn her version of the outfit in January 2020 when returning from a holiday sabbatical with Harry (and just before announcing the couple's exit from royal life). Royal watchers at the time commented on the similarity: "Kopy Kate in her Kopy Koats. No more Coat dresses for Kitty," one person wrote, via Express.
Another notable "Kopy Kate" moment came again in January 2022, with Kate pairing a long royal blue coat with a black turtleneck underneath...just like Meghan had in September 2018 for the launch of her recipe book Together: Our Community Cookbook, with her own coat from the brand Smythe.
Most recently, Meghan fans "accused" the Princess of copying the Duchess' style when Kate wore a one-shoulder royal blue (sensing a pattern here?) gown for her surprise cameo on Eurovision, where she played piano in a pre-recorded segment. The gown, from designer Jenny Packham, featured a cascading design with ruffling on the shoulder; the blue color was meant to symbolize the Ukranian flag, as the Princess was playing an instrumental version of "Stefania", a song by the Ukranian Kalush Orchestra, who won the song contest the previous year. Previously, at the beginning of 2022, Meghan had appeared at the NAACP Awards in a similar off-shoulder, chiffon-detailed blue gown, this one by designer Christopher John Rogers.
Meghan Copies Kate With Monochromatic Look; White Suit
Kate Middleton is not the only one possibly swiping style ideas from her sister-in-law, however—Meghan Markle has also donned duds that appeared strikingly similar to ones previously worn by the current Princess of Wales.
Meghan wore a monochrome jumpsuit by Gabriela Hearst in mostly black with a white band at the off-the-shoulder top to a date night with Prince Harry at Tribeca's Locanda Verde restaurant in July 2022, following Kate's appearance in a nearly identical black-and-white gown at the London Top Gun: Maverick movie premiere. The Princess' version, which was only different visually in that it was a dress and not a jumpsuit, was made by designer Roland Mouret and featured an almost exactly similar white-banded bardot neckline.
Though varying in some areas—the "coat dress" style is firmly Kate's wheelhouse, for instance—the sisters-in-law do share some favorite designers, like Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, and Erdem...so, it stands to reason, similar looks are bound to happen even if it's not done consciously.
Another notable instance of Meghan possibly "copying" Kate was at the spring 2022 Invictus Games, where the Duchess of Sussex appeared in a crisp white Valentino suit, paired with her wedding shoes by Aquazzura. However, the Duchess may have been taking style cues from the Princess, as Kate had worn a very similar white Alexander McQueen suit during her royal Caribbean tour earlier in 2022.
