Kate Middleton just paid homage to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana while greeting the people of Anglesey, Wales last week, and fans are so touched! Middleton, who recently became the Princess of Wales, 40, (following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8th) donned the stunning L.K. Bennett “Spencer” coat in honor of the previous and beloved Princess of Wales.
Middleton not only rocked the red piece in honor of Lady Di’s maiden name, but also mirrored the people princess’ very first official visit to the country. In October of 1981, the ever-so-stylish Diana toured Wales as princess, and also wore a memorable and glamorous red coat. (We’re not crying, you’re crying!)

Middleton’s coat was made from recycled Italian wool as part of the label’s “LKB Conscious Collection,” and featured gold horsebit detailing on the pockets. To complete her look, the style icon added chic black flared trousers, and a black Boden cashmere crewneck sweater underneath the coat. She wore her long light brunette tresses down, styled into her signature blowout, and parted in the center.
As for makeup, the royal family member emphasized her naturally beautiful features with a touch of rosy blush across her cheekbones, subtle black eyeliner, mascara and a glossy nude lip. To accessorize her sentimental ensemble, Middleton added, as Page Six reports, gold “Alia” hoops from the small Welsh brand Spells of Love. She also re-wore two other pieces fans might recognize— her black Grace Han “Love Letter” top-handle bag and Russell and Bromley black heels.

Middleton joined her husband Prince William, 40, for the day out as the couple visited the city where they used to live before they took on full-time royal duties in London. The dynamic duo waved and spoke to the Welsh public and visited a lifeboat station before hitting the city of Swansea and returning home to Windsor.
Royal historian Jessica Storoschuk of An Historian About Town analyzed Middleton’s outfit of choice, and told Page Six Style, “After the first two stages of mourning, widows and those closely related to the deceased person would wear muted shadows of grey and lilac to show that they were still in mourning but slowly returning to a full wardrobe and life.” As for the Princess of Wales coat, the historian added, “formal mourning is rarely observed outside of the court, and the British monarchy is doing what it can to be a modern monarchy and reflect those it represents.”
