Nicknames can be pretty common among husband and wife—and the royal couple is no exception.
In case you didn’t know, Kate Middleton and Prince William reportedly had a series of nicknames for each other as their relationship progressed. As a matter of fact, some terms of endearment were quite unexpected.
According to a 2017 article published by The Sun, it was revealed that The Duchess of Cambridge would sometimes call Prince William “Baldy” and “Big Willy.” So cheeky! As for Prince William, sources say that in the past, he has also called Kate Middleton “Babykins” and “DoD,” which stands for “Duchess of Dolittle.”
Now if you’re wondering how “Baldy” came about, an exclusive source reportedly told The Sun Online that it was because The Duke of Cambridge “complained about [Kate Middleton’s] endless mane of hair [so ‘baldy’] has been her sharp retort.”
A royal expert shared with The Sun that the nickname-calling is “done with affection usually and there are grains of truth about what one feels about another.”
The insider also mentioned, “The royals are not very good at communicating with one another so this is one way around it. Nicknames are a way of taking the family tension out of things. They can also be a rather childlike family. They love to play games and they give each other silly presents. I think it’s because they have to be so earnest in their public lives.”
The source added, “Royals have always played in private. So William and Kate are really carrying on a long held tradition.”
Now it leaves us thinking: What other nicknames might exist within The Royal Family? We can’t wait to find out!
