Kathy Bates Says Her 100-Lb Weight Loss Makes Filming So Much Easier: 'I Have A Tremendous Amount Of Energy'
The Misery actress – who last starred in American Horror Story: Apocalypse back in 2018 – told the pub that she has struggled while filming some of her previous projects because of her weight; and by comparison, her latest project has been so much easier to work on because of her much smaller frame!
"It's helped me tremendously that, over the last six or seven years, I've lost 100 lbs. I don't think I've been this slim since I was in college," Bates confessed, while talking about working on her latest role in CBS' Matlock reboot.
Bates confessed that she really struggled when filming Harry's Law from 2011 to 2012, as it was when she was at her heaviest weight, saying she was "ashamed" that she allowed herself to get so out of shape.
Reflecting on Harry's Law, Bates recalled: "I had to sit down every moment that I could. It was hard for me to walk." She added: "I'm ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy."
Bates went on to talk about currently playing the role of lawyer Madeline Matlock, and said: "I can't believe I'm saying that about doing episodic TV, but this has been so much of a challenge and a delight. Matty is certainly my magic carpet right now, and I want her to go sailing on for quite a long time."
Kathy Bates Previously Credited Mindfulness For Helping Her Lose Weight
As the Relative Strangers actress said herself, her weight loss has been something she has been working on for six to seven years. Back in 2019, Bates had already lost an impressive 60 lbs., and opened up to Us Weekly about how she couldn't have done it without practicing mindfulness.
"Mindfulness, just knowing when to push my plate away," the Annie alum confessed at the time. "My niece told me this little secret, I guess it's no secret, it's a biological thing, that at some point when you're eating, you have this involuntary sigh and that's really your brain and your stomach communicating that you've had enough," she continued.
The Titanic actress added: "The trick is to pay attention to that and push your plate away." Bates also confessed that cutting out things like soda and junk food also helped her enormously, as did having patience and determination. "I would say you have to be really patient," Bates advised. "I don't like the word willpower, but I like the word determination."
