Kelly Clarkson just wants her divorce to be finalized. The singer asked a judge to sign off on the divorce while she and ex Brandon Blackstock continue to sort out their custody and child support arrangements.
In a court document obtained by People magazine, Clarkson told the court that she felt she and Blackstock “both deserve the opportunity to build a new life.”
Clarkson's divorce proceedings have gone on for over a year, and with this recent testimony, the end of her battle may be in sight. She filed for the split in June 2020, following seven years of marriage.
Last fall, the 39-year-old was granted primary physical custody, and it seems she and Blackstock are still discussing how to co-parent.
Clarkson and Blackstock share two children: River Rose, 6, and Remington Alexander, 4. She has said that her children are her top priority in the divorce.
A source told People, "As Kelly has said, her first priority in all of this is to take care of the kids and all the hearts that are involved in this divorce. It's been a hard time for everyone, but Kelly's pleased with the court's ruling regarding custody."
Blackstock is reportedly requesting $436,000 a month from Clarkson in spousal and child support, which would total over $5.2 million annually.
People's source commented, "Divorce is hard and it gets tense for most couples going through it. But Kelly's primary focus is on doing the best she can to protect the kids," the source added. "In this case, she had to fight for them since Brandon and his attorneys were making unreasonable requests."
