During an interview with Extra, Clarkson explained that she realized something "forever changed" in her relationship with her husband, prompting them to divorce.
The singer explained, "It’s just one day when you’re like, 'Wow, this has forever changed and it’s not just my heart has changed, there’s other little hearts, too.'"
Her children have definitely played a role in how Clarkson is dealing with the breakup though the singer still wants to remain transparent about what is going on with her fans.
Clarkson said, "I have a great family and friends that are there for me… It’s a very hard thing to navigate, to be able to be honest and share your story, so maybe you can help someone else, but at the same time protecting these little kids you adore."
Supporting their children seems to be the couple's first priority, and they have acquired help from therapists to help the children deal with the transition.
She explained, "We have a lot of help as far as therapists or child psychologists ‘cause we want to do it right… Everyone’s sad and it’s okay to be sad."
Clarkson's musical talent is another way she is coping with the change and the sadness the divorce is bringing her family.
Gwen Stefani, who joined Clarkson for the interview, explained how they both viewed public breakups, especially as songwriters.
Stefani told Extra, "Kelly and I have been talking about this a lot. We’re so lucky to have music as an outlet for everything we all go through… Music is such therapy when you’re a writer."
