Despite their undoubtedly messy public breakup, Khloe Kardashian recently said that her ex Tristan Thompson is “still a good person” and that she wants him to “be happy.”
The Kardashians star opened up about their relationship when she was a guest on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast last Tuesday. “People do make mistakes and, you know, he’s still a good person,” she told host Amanda Hirsch. We certainly respect the fact that the 37-year-old can see the good in her ex, even though he “wasn’t a good partner” with her.

The mistake that spurred the end of Khloe’s relationship with Tristan was certainly a major one: the NBA player cheated on Khloe and fathered the child of Maralee Nichols.
“Today, paternity test results reveal that I fathered a child with Maralee Nichols,” Tristan wrote in a public apology on Instagram when the news broke last January. “I take full responsibility for my actions. Now that paternity has been established I look forward to amicably raising our son. I sincerely apologize to everyone I’ve hurt or disappointed throughout this ordeal both publicly and privately.”
The basketball player made sure to apologize specifically to Khloe, as well—as he should! “Khloe, you don’t deserve this,” he wrote. “You don’t deserve the heartache and humiliation I have caused you. You don’t deserve the way I have treated you over the years. My actions certainly have not lined up with the way I view you. I have the utmost respect and love for you. Regardless of what you may think. Again, I am so incredibly sorry.”
It seems that, for the most part, Khloe is happy to let bygones be bygones without holding too much of a grudge, especially since she and Tristan share a 4-year-old child of their own, True Thompson.
"He's always going to be in my life because of True," she noted on the podcast, adding that despite their differences, Tristan is "a great dad." At this point in their relationship, the star says that's the only thing that matters to her. "That's really all I need to focus on, is just his relationship with True," she said.
The couple had been together on and off since 2016 before they split. Khloe showed a great deal of empathy for the father of her child while speaking to Hirsch. She made it clear that "there's so many good sides to him" in addition to the mistakes his made, "but no one gets to see those because they're all overshadowed by like the personal stuff that's going on between him and I." That's certainly one of the fallbacks of a public breakup, but at least the reality star is taking the high road and refraining from speaking negatively about Tristan. In fact, she says she wants him to have a "fair shot" at happiness.
Despite the fact that Khloe hopes their personal issues don't ruin any opportunities her ex may have to live a happy life, she understands that the public feels strongly about the situation. "I don't ever encourage anyone to just like jump on that bandwagon. But I also think people can have their own feelings," she explained. What a mature take—good for you, Khloe!
