Kim Kardashian finally got the good news she was hoping for in the divorce courts this week, as she was officially declared single by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Steve Cochran on Wednesday, March 2nd. The judge’s ruling comes just over one year after Kardashian first filed for divorce from Kanye West, after nearly seven years of marriage.
According to reports, the 41-year-old SKIMS founder attended the hearing virtually, and answered “yes” to several questions, including whether there was a breakdown in the marriage, and whether she wants to drop West from her surname and revert to her maiden name. It’s currently believed that the four children she shares with the 44-year-old “Eazy” rapper – North, 8, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2 – will keep their last names as West.
The former Keeping Up with the Kardashians star first filed a request to become legally single in December 2021, but it was initially looking like she would have had to work a lot harder to get the result she wanted. The Yeezy designer was seemingly making it very difficult for her due to his highly publicized dates, very public putdowns about her parenting, bashing her new boyfriend Pete Davidson, leaking private text messages, the list goes on.
Kardashian referenced all of the above in her desperate plea to a judge to proceed with the divorce as quickly as possible. "I very much desire to be divorced," Kim previously pleaded, as per court documents obtained by Page Six. "Kanye has been putting a lot of misinformation regarding our private matters and co-parenting on social media, which has created emotional distress."
However, despite his aforementioned antics, the "Flashing Lights" rapper made an unexpected U-turn and said that he decided to grant Kim the single status she so desperately longed for because he felt it was the right thing to do for their four children. "I’ve asked my team to expedite the dissolution of my marriage to Kim so I can put my entire attention into our beautiful children," Kanye said in a statement to Hollywood Unlocked.
Although Kim is now officially a single woman, their divorce battle is far from over, as they now have the very complicated task of dividing all of their assets and coming to a custody agreement for their four children.
