Kim Kardashian has undoubtedly experienced a significant career shift since her early appearances on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Today, the reality star, 44, leads several thriving enterprises, including SKIMS and SKKN, and stars in Hulu’s The Kardashians.
Physically, she has also changed, frequently sparking conversations about plastic surgery and weight fluctuations. The mom of four’s weight has varied notably over time.
Kardashian has candidly discussed her weight loss journey, such as losing 16 pounds in three weeks to wear one of Marilyn Monroe‘s most famous dresses for the 2022 Met Gala, and shedding 60 pounds in 2015 through the Atkins low-carb diet, which she has intermittently followed.
Below, we will explore the specifics of her diet and what she has shared about her dietary habits and exercise routines.
Inside Kim Kardashian's Weight Loss Transformation Over The Years And Low-Carb Atkins Diet
In June 2022, Kardashian discussed her evolving figure on TODAY. She told co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie why it was important to her to don Monroe's Jean Louis gown (that the Hollywood legend first wore when singing “Happy Birthday” to then-President John F. Kennedy in 1962). "I looked at it like a role and I really wanted to wear this dress," she explained.
"It was really important to me,” Kardashian added. Regarding her diet, she continued: "Since then, afterwards, I continued to eat really healthy. I'm down 21 pounds now. I'm not trying to lose any more weight, but I have more energy than ever."
The law student went on: "I cut out so much sugar — a lot of junk food I was eating, I didn't realize, like a lot of fried foods. And I just completely changed my lifestyle." She noted that this major shift helped her learn “a lot about [her] lifestyle and [her] mental health.”
Although Kardashian took pride in her new look, some of her supporters were less than thrilled with her decision. Once it became public that she had shed pounds quickly, she faced criticism for losing so much weight in such a brief span. In June of that year, she stressed to The New York Times that she "didn't do anything wrong" and "didn't do anything unhealthy."
What Is The Atkins Diet?
As fans are aware, Kardashian has intermittently followed the Atkins diet to shed her "baby weight" over the years. She initially discussed this in 2013 after the birth of her daughter North, whom she co-parents with her ex Kanye West. Kardashian and the Grammy winner, 47, also share son Saint, 8, daughter Chicago, 6, and son Psalm, 5.
The Atkins diet, known for its low-carbohydrate approach, asserts that it helps with weight loss while allowing people to consume unlimited amounts of protein and fat. Dr. Robert Atkins first introduced this diet in his 1972 bestselling book.
Kardashian shared with ABC News that she successfully used the Atkins diet to shed pounds after the birth of her first child.
As she also dished to E! News one year later: "When I really need to kick it up, then I’ll do low carbs, like the Atkins diet."
According to Business Insider, the Atkins spokesperson credited the diet with helping her shed 60 pounds after the birth of her second child, Saint, in 2015.
Kardashian adhered to the “Atkins 40” diet, consuming 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of net carbohydrates daily, along with three portions of protein weighing between 113 and 170 grams, and two to four servings of fat. Additionally, she made sure to drink eight cups of water each day and occasionally indulged in an Atkins peanut butter cup.
Throughout the years, Kardashian has frequently posted numerous photos and videos showcasing her rigorous exercise routines. Her personal trainer, Senada Greca, recently discussed the techniques that contribute to her toned body.
During an episode of Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, the trainer dished: "Never does she complain or back away from something that I put her through, and I put her through a lot. She never backs away. She always pushes through."
In another interview with Women’s Health, Kardashian's previous trainer Melissa Alcantara said the star is "the best client and athlete you can have" and said she "never cancels."
Alcantara also mentioned that Kardashian consistently fits in her workouts early in the morning, favoring weightlifting over cardio, and that her lower body routine is extremely intense.
