Newsmax host Greg Kelly was just party to one heck of an awkward moment this week when, while interviewing Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancee Kimberly Guilfoyle, the host referred to former president Donald Trump as her “potential father-in-law,” prompting a seemingly annoyed or offended reaction from Guilfoyle.

Kelly, who was discussing the elder Trump’s recent arrest, said to Guilfoyle, “So obviously this atrocity unfolds, your potential father-in-law under arrest. But you know what? it’s turning up roses.” This prompted Kimberly to respond, obviously taken aback, “Potential? Future father-in-law. Jesus.”

The interview got off to an awkward start right off the bat with Kelly’s flub, which seemed to suggest that there might be a future in which Donald Trump would not end up being Guilfoyle’s father-in-law, despite her long engagement to his son, Donald Trump Jr. In an attempt to pull back from the moment, the Newsmax host asked Kimberly, “Is [the engagement] sealed? Do we have a [wedding] date?” Kimberly responded, still laughing from the awkward interaction, “Uh, not that I’m sharing on the air!”

Kelly, understanding that the interviewee didn’t seem to want to discuss her engagement, conceded, “Fair enough. Hey, I’m glad, I didn’t realize. There’s a ring. Fantastic, that’s great news.” To this, Guilfoyle quipped, “We’ve been engaged, babe, for two years, but we’ll take this breaking news alert. That’s hysterical.” Pushing through, Kelly responded, “Well, I mean, alright. Look, we need—what’s [Trump Jr.] waiting for?”

The future Trump daughter-in-law finally shut down the line of questioning: "We need more Trump," she replied bluntly, referring to shifting the subject of the conversation.

Twitter/X had great fun with the awkward interaction, posting their responses to the Newsmax clip on the social media platform:

Donald Trump Jr. Engaged To Kimberly Guilfoyle Since New Year's Eve 2020

The uncomfortable interview segment was especially awkward in light of the fact that it's been public knowledge Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. have been engaged since 2020, with news of the New Year's Eve 2020 proposal being confirmed to the media in January 2022. At the time, a source told the Daily Mail, "Don and Kim got engaged on New Year's Eve 2020, which is Don's birthday. They've been together for almost four years now and have been friends for 15 years...They've kept it private for the past year as they settled into life in Florida after moving from New York. Both are focused on their children—they have six between them—and their work."

Kimberly was previously married to current California governor Gavin Newsom, who interestingly is being floated as a presidential prospect on the Democratic side against or in place of current President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. That would put her ex in direct competition with the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump—her future father-in-law—if the former president is able to run amidst all of his current legal troubles. Guilfoyle and Newsom share a son, Ronan. Trump Jr. has 5 children with ex-wife Vanessa Trump; the couple split in 2018.
