When we get older, the skin around our eyes often experiences textural changes that can make makeup application a challenge. If you were the girl who always pulled off the perfect cat’s wing eye, you may start to notice your wing is vanishing beneath the weight of a hooded lid. The liner can disappear into your skin folds and make your eyes look smaller, instead of larger and wider.
Beauty Expert Erica Taylor has a solution for that: “Don’t ever try to make a line.”

In fact, it’s not a line at all that you’re after with mature eyes; it’s a subtle eyeliner technique that’s easier to achieve and will make mature eyes pop more than thicker liner and the perfect “line.” Here’s your step-by-step guide to mature eyeliner greatness.
1. Add Color Along the Lash Line
You’ll need a thin eyeliner pen (a creamy formula works well). Start at the base of the top lash line bed and add color to the area to make lashes appear fuller, but here’s the important reminder: don’t pull your line across the lid, but rather dot color gentle by the lashes. The goal is to deepen the shade of your lashes without filling in the lid space, which can make your eyes look smaller. When you get to the outer corner of your eye, forget everything you’ve been taught before about eyeliner: if you have hooded eyes or skin overlapping the outer lid, you can’t cut through with a harsh line without it looking unnatural.
2. Keep Liner Close to the Outer Eye
Look straight on into a mirror. Your eye will want to go “down,” Taylor says, but you’ll want to take your eyeliner pen and add color slightly up from the base of your outer lid to give it a little lift. Don’t try to pull the line out, which can make your makeup look more theatrical. You don’t have to go past the hooded skin on the outer corner or your eyes — “just think in terms of going thicker on the end” of the eye, Taylor says.
3. Complete Your Eye Makeup Look
You can now take a small angled brush and smudge your liner just a bit to make it appear softer so that there are no hard edges. When done correctly, this technique will give you a lifted eye without “extending past a textural situation.” You can also use a liquid eyeliner for this look, but remember to “press” with it and not “make a line” to avoid making unnatural squiggles. Give this simple technique a try for a “natural lifted eye.”
