As we navigate the landscape of health and wellness in 2024, the relationship between inflammation and weight loss has gained increased attention. Understanding how our dietary choices can impact inflammation levels is a key component of effective weight management. When it comes to grocery store shopping for weight loss, making informed decisions is crucial.
We spoke with Dr. Steve Gendron, founder of Mindful Living Choice and a contributing writer at the Berkeley Well-Being Institute as a food ingredients expert, to learn about two common and widespread ingredients you should watch out for when grocery shopping. Gendron revealed that sugar & high-fructose corn syrup and refined carbs are the ones to remove from your shopping cart.
Sugar and High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Steering clear of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup during grocery shopping is essential for multiple reasons, particularly in the pursuit of a healthier weight and reduced inflammation. Both sugar and high-fructose corn syrup are associated with a myriad of adverse health effects, including heightened inflammation levels in the body. Chronic inflammation has been linked to various health issues, including obesity and weight gain.
"These sweet culprits are everywhere – in cookies, sodas, and even some bread. They're not just bad for your waistline; they get your body all inflamed, leading to a whole bunch of problems, including making it tough to drop pounds," says Gendron.
Refined Carbs
Refined carbs, such as those found in white bread, sugary cereals, and processed snacks, are quickly broken down into sugars, causing a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This spike triggers an inflammatory response in the body and can contribute to the development of insulin resistance, a factor linked to weight gain. Additionally, refined carbs lack essential nutrients and fiber, leaving individuals feeling less satisfied and more prone to overeating.
"Think white bread, pasta, and anything made with white flour. They shoot your blood sugar up high, causing your body to inflame and making it harder for you to lose weight," Gendron states.
The Bottom Line
Gendron elaborates further and says that "it's all about calming down that inflammation. When your body is busy fighting inflammation, it can mess with your insulin (making your body store fat instead of using it for energy), and even throw your hunger hormones out of whack (making you think you're hungry when you're not)."
So what should you shop for at the grocery store if you want to reduce inflammation and lose weight? Gendron recommends whole foods. "The secret sauce to losing weight is eating foods that are the opposite of inflammatory – like fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and good fats. This isn't just about dropping pounds; it's about feeling awesome, having more energy, and being healthier overall."
