While many of us rely on pre-cooked frozen shrimp to plan many of our weekday meals, we’ll have to take heed this week due to a major recall on this popular frozen seafood item.

Frozen shrimp is being pulled from Whole Foods and other grocery store chain’s shelves due to salmonella!

The FDA has issued warnings on several Avanti Frozen Foods products, all cooked, peeled, and deveined frozen shrimp bags, after six people fell ill.

The food maker operates several brand Censea, Chicken of the Sea and Hannaford, all of which are affected by the recall and Thrillist reports are sold at Whole Foods.

The recall is due to the potential for salmonella contamination; as of June 25th or the date of the recall, six people had reported “salmonella-related illness” in connection with eating the shrimp products in question.

The recall alert states that the potentially-contaminated products were distributed from late December 2020 through February 2021. Examples of products affected include Censea two-pound bags and Chicken of the Sea 16-ounce trays. See the complete list here.

The shrimp recall follows a series of other frozen food recalls by the FDA in recent months, including Costco frozen dinners and frozen Greek yogurt bars. Stay safe out there, grocery shoppers!
