As the eternally powerful makeup tool, eyeliner has been a historically popular mainstay in statement-making looks from ancient royalty to modern rock stars. With its ability to emphasize the windows to your soul, it’s understandable why you’d want to master it in your daily routine.
From cat-eyes to simple lines, and liquid to pencil types, we’ve got you covered with 6 expert-approved tips for your top lids. We spoke with professional makeup artists Andrea Claire and Mandie Brice about all things eyeliner, and you won’t want to miss these helpful, quick, and easy tricks!
Mastering That Liquid, Winged Cat-Eye
Whether you’re aiming for a timeless, Old Hollywood glam staple or a sharp, classic punk line that could cut glass, even vastly different aesthetics and styles revolve around winged cat-eye eyeliner.
Drawing a line that extends from the outer corner of your eye garners a lot of power and it can open up your peepers immensely.
If you’re like me and it takes countless tries to flick an even line with liquid eyeliner, rest assured that Claire relies on this go-to method. “My number one tip for a cat-eye is using scotch tape for the precision,” says Claire. “Take a piece of sticky tape, tap to make it less sticky and then place it where you want the cat-eye.”
She explains that the tape is now your hard edge to trace along. “Lift the tape, et voila!” adds Claire, who then advises to repeat this step on your opposite eyelid. If you are sensitive to the tape, she recommends using the edge of a business card or a ruler.
“To create a tapered edge,” Claire says, “use a cotton bud dipped in micellar water to define that point, and any ‘oops’ along the edge.”
Nailing A Simple Liquid Line
If you’re an avid fan of liquid liner but just want a simple, clean line (and nothing dramatic), Claire says it’s all about your hand position when applying it.
“Liquid eyeliner is tricky because it sets fast and some brands flake if you layer them,” says Claire, “You need to be quick.” She says to anchor your elbow onto a countertop or other steady surface. “This helps to act as a sort of tripod to get a straight, smooth finish,” says Claire.
“If you struggle with a seamless line, you can kick it kindergartener-style by adding small dots first as a guide to connect,” she adds. (We’ll definitely be trying that!)
Clean Lining With A Pencil
A pencil liner is a perfect option when you want to emphasize your eyes subtly and create a smokey or smudged effect. The other main benefit is there’s no rush to create a flawless line or anything because you aren’t waiting for it to dry like liquid products. Some popular kinds you might be familiar with include kohl, kajal, gel or powder.
Similarly to the last tip, if you solely desire a minimal line without smudging or added drama, Claire says to “layer it with either a setting powder or the same shade of eyeshadow to lock the pencil in.” For added security in any type of liner, Claire says, “start with an eye primer which will give you a base to grip the liner.”
“If you still get that pencil bleed, Claire continues, “then you may need to try another brand or even have a look at any creams that you are using prior to makeup,” as they may be leaving an “emollient residue” breaking down your pencil.
Keep It Simple
According to Brice, "Another eyeliner tip would be not to go all the way around the eye, as heavy liner on the under eye can make you look old and tired.
She adds, "I also recommend [applying eyeliner on] the outer 2/3 on top, especially for those with smaller eyes, as it opens them up." You definitely don't want to add years to your look, so it's best to keep this tip in mind.
Use Your Lash Line As A Guide
"For beginners who are nervous about drawing a straight line, I recommend putting small dots of liner (any formula except liquid) along the lash line, and then using a cotton swab or smudge brush to blend them together," she tells us. Doing so will help you achieve that straight line without the added struggle!"
Think About Your Overall Makeup Look
At the end of the day, Brice emphasizes, "There is no 'best' eyeliner look for any eye shape because so much falls into personal preference." Makeup isn't a one-size-fits-all and there's definitely room for experimentation. "Additionally, what the rest of the makeup look is makes a huge difference," she clarifies. "For example, I often recommend a bright color on hooded eyes to ensure it is visible. But if you’re also wearing bright lipstick, for example, it can end up looking clownish."
