5 Makeup Struggles Women Over 50 Make That Can ‘Settle Into Wrinkles’ And ‘Draw Attention’ To Fine Lines: ‘Make You Look Tired And Aged’

Although plenty of makeup rules are made to be broken, makeup on mature skin and features works best when some guidelines are followed. This is because our needs after a certain age become a bit different. If you are looking for ways to ensure your skin appears lifted and more refreshed, for example, the way you apply foundation, powder, and blush will not always be the same way you did these things when you were 18. Your eyes and lips also have different needs. Maybe your eyelids are more hooded now and eyeliner disappears more readily after you’ve applied it. It can also become more difficult to locate the border of your lips, and this is a time when a great nude or pink-nude lipliner becomes a lifesaver.

Unless you are a professional makeup artist, you probably have at least one thing you struggle to get right with your makeup. Here are five common makeup struggles that women over 50 experience that can lead to makeup that can “settle into wrinkles,” “draw attention” to fine lines, and “make you look more tired and aged.”

1. Applying Too Much Foundation

Many women make the mistake of thinking a heavier foundation application will help minimize the appearance of more fine lines and wrinkles. In reality, the opposite is true: all of that makeup can sink into lines and pores and make them appear more extreme. A better approach is to apply primer first so that your pores and lines are filled in and skin is prepped for makeup. Then, only apply foundation where you need it most and blend it in well.

2. Too Much Light Concealer Under the Eyes

Darkness under the eyes can become more prominent with age. The skin under the eyes is thin and, with time, becomes thinner, which highlights every bit of discoloration or fine line that pops up. Addressing these issues with the lightest concealer you can find in the hopes that it will erase flaws is not the answer, though. A too-light concealer can make the area look even more conspicuous. Invest in a quality color corrector instead and use that to neutralize blues, purples, and blacks that appear under the eyes.

3. Applying Powder With a Heavy Hand

Translucent powder is a great finishing tool that sets your foundation and concealer and makes them last longer. But, as with foundation, a little powder goes a long way, and too much powder only emphasizes pores and lines.

4. Overly Dark Brows

Very dark eyebrows were a big trend a few years back, but can look severe on mature faces. Instead of choosing dark brows that make the skin look paler and create shadows near the eyes, choosing a more natural brow look can lighten your face.

5. Black Eyeliner

Too much black eyeliner around the eyes can make your peepers look smaller and more severe than you may want. A simple workaround is to keep the eyeliner, but swap black for brown, gray, or even a color that complements your eye color, like purple for brown eyes and gold for blue eyes. Concentrate the liner on your top lash line and leave your bottom lash line less defined to create a wide-awake look.
