This post has been updated since its original publication date to include recent facts
The first teaser trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed live-action Barbie movie featuring Margot Robbie, 32, in the starring role and Ryan Gosling, 42, as her handsome beau Ken has finally been released – and it’s just as amazing as we imagined!
First ‘Barbie’ Teaser Trailer Officially ReleasedFans can see the first glimpse of the Oscar-nominated actress in the first outfit the iconic Mattel doll ever wore back in 1959 – a strapless black and white swimsuit with vintage black and white sunglasses and curly bangs – and winking at the camera, as Helen Mirren, who is narrating, references the fact that Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the U.S. with adult features.
The end of the teaser shows Margot as Barbie as we know her today, with the long, platinum blonde hair and literal Barbiecore pink midi dress, while Ryan as Ken is dancing with his platinum blonde hair tied back with a headband, and his shiny abs on display as his black shirt is worn open. We can also catch very brief glimpses of their fellow cast-mates, including Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, and America Ferrera. Looks like life in plastic really is fantastic, and we cannot *wait* for the movie to come out next year!
Margot and Ryan’s costumes for the upcoming Barbie flick have been sending the internet into a frenzy since the first paparazzi pictures first graced the internet in June earlier this year. From bell bottoms to cowboy outfits to neon get-ups, fans have continued to marvel over how well-casted the duo are as the iconic Barbie and Ken. Some of our favorite snaps have featured Robbie and Gosling rollerblading in 80s-inspired workout gear while filming a scene on the Venice Beach boardwalk in California. Obsessed doesn’t even cut it!
Robbie showed off her incredible figure in a curve-hugging bodysuit, pink biker shorts, a bright visor, as well as neon green elbow pads and knee pads. (Safety first!) Gosling adorably matched with her, wearing a vest and shorts of the same pattern as her one-piece, and also twinned with his knee pads, visor and of course, roller-skates.
Naturally, fans were “overwhelmed” and “super excited” to see another pic from the Barbie set, as many shared their thoughts on the images on Twitter. “These neon 80s looks are nothing short of iconic,” one fan wrote as another added, “I truly can’t wait to see this!!! look at them!” While there are countless fan tweets hyping up the Greta Gerwig-directed film (that is set for a summer 2023 release), we rounded up the funniest, wittiest and most relatable:
In August of 2021, Robbie sat down for an interview with British Vogue to discuss taking on such a popular character, the expectations she felt from fans, and how she was then preparing for the role. Robbie explained that the character “comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections,” and added that “with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t,'” Robbie said. Gerwig’s partner Noah Baumbach, (director of films such as Marriage Story and The Squid and The Whale) is co-writing the script with her, and production for the film began earlier this year. Barbie will zoom into theaters with her pink car on July 21st, 2023.
