Margot Robbie graced the world premiere of Barbie in a shimmering black gown by Schiaparelli, inspired by the ‘Solo In The Spotlight’ 1960 Barbie doll! The Oscar nominee turned heads at the highly anticipated film‘s red carpet event in Los Angeles as she opted for a black dress rather than a pink one (as many fans might have expected to see on her).
The Babylon star’s standout frock featured a sequined bustier, several layers of black tulle, and as the label noted on Instagram, one single “hand-painted, embroidered rose” placed on its poofy hemline.
Robbie joined her co-star (and Ken to her Barbie), Ryan Gosling while posing for photos and wowing fans with her mega-watt smile and eye-catching ensemble.

The 33-year-old's dress for the occasion, as her stylist Andrew Mukamal noted for his Instagram followers, channeled a Mattel doll from 1960 that donned an identical outfit. Robbie's number had a strapless neckline and like the doll, she sported glamorous, opera-length black gloves. As for her shoes, the I, Tonya actress stepped out in sleek, open-toed Manolo Blahnik black heels.
The Amsterdam alum accessorized with a glittery diamond choker necklace and studs from Lorraine Schwartz. Robbie wore her signature blonde tresses in an Old Hollywood-esque, wavy ponytail. For her makeup look, the Australia native rocked subtle black liner, sky-high lashes and rosy blush on her high cheekbones. She topped it all off with a classic red lip.
Naturally, many fans couldn't get enough of Robbie's latest press tour look (she's paid homage to several Barbie dolls throughout history in the past few weeks). On Twitter and Instagram, countless expressed that they also "loved seeing" her join Gosling and their fellow co-star America Ferrera on the red carpet this week (those two did wear pink!)
Fans React To Robbie's Choice Of A Black (Not Pink!) Dress
Many also shared how "surprised" they were that Robbie chose a black gown rather than a pink one for the latest Barbie promotional event. In the comment section of a recent IG post by E! News, some reacted to Robbie's look with shock and awe.
"Shocking that she’s wearing black. Barbie should be pink?!" one wrote as another replied: "Barbie doesn't only wear pink." On Twitter, many agreed in that Barbie dolls throughout time have worn many colors apart from pink (and that there's no denying how "gorgeous" Robbie's Schiaparelli gown is!)
One fan recently tweeted, regarding Robbie's black get-up: "this commitment to barbiecore is top notch." Another added: "Margot Robbie nailed it!" Someone else pointed out that Robbie has "consistently slayed" when it comes to style for promoting the Greta Gerwig-directed film, and we couldn't have said it better ourselves.
The long-awaited, live-action Barbie movie hits theaters in the United States and United Kingdom on July 21, 2023. Mark your calendars!
