We don’t even have official confirmation that Matty Healy and Taylor Swift dated, but fans are already speculating that the singer apologized to Taylor in absentia during a recent performance by Matty and his band, The 1975.

Matty Healy Shares 'Sorry' Message On Stage During Performance

On June 7th, during the band's concert in Dublin, Ireland, The 1975 was performing a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" when Matty spray-painted the word "SORRY" in black on a white backdrop on the stage, before taking a step back, thinking for a few moments, and eventually adding a "?" to the end of the statement.

Matty and Taylor were recently rumored to be dating after the end of Taylor's engagement to longtime beau Joe Alwyn earlier this year—the musical pair were seen together several times this spring, and Matty was spotted at more than one of Taylor's Eras Tour concerts. However, the speculated romance was controversial with fans, as Matty has become known for incendiary comments such as referring to rapper Ice Spice as an "Inuit Spice Girl" and a "chubby Chinese lady" during a guest spot on a podcast in February. According to an insider, the couple was "no longer romantically involved" as of the beginning of this month.

The Dublin "SORRY?" display, which the singer presented without direct comment, was soon linked by Swifties and social media users to the alleged recent breakup of the short-lived Matty-Taylor relationship.

Fans Speculate: 'Veiled Reference To His Recent Breakup?

As Matty didn't explain what the "SORRY?" display meant, Twitter users scrambled to understand why the singer was saying sorry—and who he might be apologizing to.

The frontman has not yet explained what the one-word message meant, leaving fans to question whether it's a message targeted to Taylor Swift about their supposed recent breakup, or to Ice Spice for his derogatory comments, or simply a reference to something fans are unaware of. If the "SORRY?" was on Taylor's behalf, it could be an apology for messing up their blossoming relationship—a source told Closer magazine before the purported breakup, "Matty's telling the world this is the real deal - they're building a long-term future, and marriage and kids are his goal, assuming it all works out."
