McDonald’s Is Changing Its Breakfast Menu Immediately—What Is Happening?
February 2, 2022 by Marissa Matozzo
As McDonald’s frequenters know, the restaurants do not have the same menu options in the U.S. as they do in the U.K., Europe and elsewhere. This includes the vastly different breakfast menus.
British McDonald’s customers were shocked on January 24th when the American fast food chain announced that bagels and breakfast wraps would be “officially gone” from their menu (meanwhile here in The U.S., our closest version of a bagel is a biscuit sandwich and as for wraps, there’s the sausage burrito).
The chain reduced its menu options in both countries in May 2020 when reopening after the initial COVID-19 global outbreak in March of that year. Bagels and wraps were noticeably missing from the British McDonald’s menu, but customers hoped they would some day return.
The chain tweeted a comical statement (intended to look like a celeb break-up announcement?) on January 24th writing, “It is with love and deep respect for one another that we announce that we are parting ways with Breakfast Bagels & Breakfast Wraps.” McDonald’s U.K. continued, “We adore each other deeply but our love for the iconic McMuffin was simply too hard to ignore.”
In an attempt to soften the blow of the devastating news to customers who voiced their opinions on Twitter, McDonald’s added that its approximately 1,300 outlets in Britain would reduce the price of McMuffins to 99 pounds via its app.
A McDonald’s spokesman told The Daily Mail, “We can confirm that, following their temporary removal from the menu in March 2020, breakfast bagels and breakfast wraps will not be making a return.” (This probably means that American McDonald’s fans won’t get to try those options here either).
“We are always working on our menu and look forward to introducing some new breakfast items later this year,” they continued. Well, at least we all have Shamrock Shakes for St. Patrick’s Day to look forward to!
