Burger King just brought back the “Big King,” as part of the fast food chain’s latest limited-time sandwich offerings. This popular item was first added to the chain’s U.S. menu as summer ended in 1997, and remained a staple option for twenty years before being removed and then added once again in both 2019 and 2020. Now, it’s making a grand return.
McDonald’s fans on Twitter are quick to note that the “Big King” contains roughly the same ingredients as the iconic McDonald’s “Big Mac.” Utilizing the word “big” in the name of the sandwich doesn’t seem to be a subtle move on Burger King’s part either.
You might have heard the 1975 signature jingle for McDonald's "Big Mac"(which first debuted in the U.S. 1967). It literally lists its ingredients in its lyrics— "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun."
While Burger King's "Big King" doesn't have a catchy tune to go along with it, it utterly consists of "two flame-grilled beef patties, King Sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun." (Hmmm....)
As Daniel Kline for The Street writes, it seems like "Burger King is not being shy here." Kline continues, writing, "the 'Big King' is either a blatant copy or a bold challenge to its well-established rival [McDonald's 'Big Mac'], depending upon your perspective.
While both burgers are dubbed "tasty" and "timeless" by their respective fans, the "Big King" does have an interesting "Big-Mac"-inspired history that probably wouldn't please McDonald's.
