McDonald’s is adding a new chicken sandwich to its menu in early 2021–and customers already can’t wait to try it.

The crispy chicken sandwich was first introduced in Houston, Texas, and in Knoxville, Tennessee last year, but soon it will be coming to McDonald’s locations across the United States.

So what can you expect from this new chicken sandwich?

It's a pretty simple sandwich: a fried chicken filet served on a potato roll, topped with butter and pickles. You could also opt for the deluxe version, which adds on tomatoes, lettuce, and mayonnaise.

In a statement, a spokesperson explained the new menu addition: "McDonald's has significant opportunity to expand its chicken offerings, a category that is growing faster than beef. This includes leveraging the extraordinary global strength of Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken sandwich, and investing in new line extensions and flavors."

"It also means continuing to offer food that aligns with current consumer trends and taste profiles, like spicy."

The McDonald's National Owners Association also commented on this menu addition back in January: "We need to stay focused on coming up with a Chicken Sandwich our customers are going to crave. A chicken sandwich that gives our customers another reason to visit McDonald's. A McDonald's Classic to go with our classic sweet tea."

According to Business Insider, this new expanded menu is a sign of McDonald's competition with chains like Popeyes, who launched a popular new chicken last year, and Chick-fil-A.

Wendy's is also a runner in this competition, dubbed the "chicken-sandwich wars," and they released a similar menu item in October.

Although we'll have to wait until 2021 to see if this chicken sandwich measures up to the competition, it's definitely an exciting move for McDonald's--and for their customers who are eagerly waiting to try this crispy chicken sandwich.
