Have you ever noticed there are two different types of eggs served up in McDonald’s meals? Depending on what you order, you may end up with either round eggs (like the kind found in an Egg McMuffin) or square eggs (these are featured in bacon egg and cheese sandwiches). But what, exactly, is the difference in the cooking processes of these eggs? One McDonald’s worker, TikTok user @essentialmcdonalds, took to the video platform to answer this burning question.

What’s the difference between round eggs and square eggs at McDonald’s?
In addition to the very obvious difference between round and square eggs (the shape), there’s one other crucial factor that differentiates these two varieties. According to the TikTok by @essentialmcdonalds, one version is cooked fresh, while the other comes precooked.
Square eggs are precooked
Those yellow, square eggs that you’ll find on your bacon egg and cheese or your McGriddle arrive at the restaurant packed in an airtight container, the TikToker explains: “They come pre-cooked. All we do is throw them on the grill.”
The Breakfast FAQ on the McDonald’s website explains this further: “Our folded eggs, like the ones on a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, are made with liquid eggs that are pre-cooked and folded before being flash frozen by our suppliers. Once in our kitchens, they’re prepared on the grill with real butter.”

Round eggs are cooked fresh
The round eggs, on the other hand, are cooked fresh in the restaurant. @essentialmcdonalds shows viewers how it’s done, using a circular mold (according to the McDonald’s website, this is aptly named an “egg ring”) to give them their perfect shape. After placing the egg ring on the griddle, he cracks an egg into it, breaks the yolk, and pours water onto the grill to create steam.
Customer reactions from viewers are divided. While some prefer the fresher option, there are still plenty who will vouch for the folded variety: “Folded egg wins every single time. I don’t care that it’s premade,” one stated.
If you’re curious and would like to learn more about both types of McDonald’s eggs, all it takes is a quick visit to the McDonald’s website, where you’ll find even more info about the folded eggs, the round eggs, and even the scrambled eggs (which are made with liquid eggs, if you were wondering) and sausage burrito eggs.
