According to the article, the McDonald's spokesman called the move a "difficult decision" for the company, especially considering that the chain had been there for 17 years.
However, The Post explains, "[H]e insisted it wasn’t related to the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated tourist haunts like Times Square for months."
Instead, the source said the decision was based on a restaurant portfolio review: "McDonald’s reviews its restaurant portfolio on a regular basis to make the best decisions for our business moving forward."
Although saying goodbye to the former flagship--which boasted four stories and a Broadway-inspired McDonald's marquee--must be difficult, the chain's new flagship surely softened the blow.
The new location is in a former Toys R Us store, and it has the room to accommodate plenty of customers--and potentially party goers.
The Post explains, "[T]he new McDonald’s features 18 self-ordering kiosks — and just five cashiers — as well as upholstered banquettes and table service."
Plus, according to sources, the chain has even discussed renting out this impressive location for New Year's Eve, considering its view of Times Square.
Despite this disappointing news, there are still plenty of McDonald's locations open in New York City to enjoy.
“We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at the flagship McDonald’s on 45th Street and Broadway and in the neighboring communities,” the spokesman told The Post.
