It was just a few weeks ago that the late Queen Elizabeth’s childhood friend, Lady Glenconner, slammed Meghan Markle on an episode of Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast, saying Meghan most likely assumed that being a royal was simply “riding around in a golden coach.” Now sources close to the former royal are saying that Meghan is “furious” over these allegations, and that it’s “sparked a new war between Meghan and the royal family.”
Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, left their royal duties behind for California in 2020, and effectively burned bridges with the royal family through a host of scathing comments about them. From the pair’s 2021 interview with Oprah in which they accused the royal family of racism and mistreatment to Harry’s memoir, Spare, there doesn’t seem to be any reconciliation in the future, and Lady Glenconner’s recent comments seem to drive that sentiment home.
Lady Glenconner shares her thoughts on Meghan Markle
In the October 19th episode of Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast, Lady Glenconner, who was one of Queen Elizabeth’s maids of honor at her 1953 coronation, spoke on Meghan Markle’s brief time as a royal. “I think that the thing about Meghan was, she had no idea what was expected of her,” she explained. “She though it was sort of like being another actress, you know. Riding around in a golden coach and everything like that.”
She took it even further by saying that she “feels very sad for Harry,” effectively insinuating that she blames Meghan for the pair’s estrangement from the royal family. And she isn’t the only person to feel this way. The 91-year-old recalled that she spoke with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at King Charles’ coronation in May and asked him what Americans thought of the ex-royals. “We all feel very, very sorry for Harry,” Kerry reportedly said. “I think I can just leave it at that.”
Meghan Markle is ready for 'war'
A source close to the Suits actress said that Meghan has not taken to this new information kindly. "She's upset and furious," the source claims. "She's back in the hot seat, and this time it's the queen's childhood friend who’s accusing her of having a skewed sense of duty."
The source explained that from Meghan's point of view, Lady Glenconner "basically says Meghan didn't take royal life seriously, treated it like a movie role and used it to become a bigger celebrity. It's a devastating slam from a highly regarded insider—and it's sparked a new war between Meghan and the royal family."
Meghan also "feels like it’s et another low blow aimed to assassinate her character," and that she "believes the royal family is loving this—especially the 'feeling bad for Harry' comments."
Fan reactions
Fans unfortunately did not take Meghan's side, which is quite common in these situations. "She always plays the victim!" one user posted on Reddit. "She only cares about being rich and famous and uses Harry and the royal family for financial gain."
Another user agreed, writing, "She completely controls Harry (from what I see)… she is constantly directing his paths and is a master at manipulation."
Other users voiced that they also felt bad for Prince Harry. One person commented, "I do find myself feeling so very sorry for Harry. His entire life seems to have been like an emotional roller coaster ride, and I don’t think that marrying Meghan has helped any."
"He was happy before her," another user agreed. "He had his charities and his military endeavors. She got ahold of him, and he slowly started dropping things."
But others didn't have any sympathy for Harry, writing, "I used to feel sorry for him, but not anymore. He has actively taken part in harming his family."
"I don't feel sorry for Harry," another person said. "He made his choices."
