Meghan Markle Opens Up About Preclampsia Battle
Markle, who shares two children with Prince Harry, Archie, 5, and Lilibet 3, spoke about her diagnosis on the very first episode of her new podcast. Preeclampsia, according to Mayo Clinic, is characterized by high blood pressure and can lead to serious complications for both the mother and baby.
Meghan revealed she was diagnosed after giving birth, though didn't specify after which birth she received the diagnosis. "You're still trying to juggle all these things and the world doesn't know what is happening, quietly, and in the quiet you are still trying to show up for people," she said.
Whitney Wolfe Herd Agrees
The first guest on Meghan's podcast, Whitney Wolfe Herd, had also been diagnosed with preeclampsia. The Bumble founder shed some light on her experience with the disease as well, describing it as "life or death, truly," and adding that "it's really scary."
While there's no treatment for preeclampsia, the best evidence for prevention of the condition is a low dosage of aspirin. If the condition runs in your family, be sure to let your doctors know and determine if you're at risk for diagnosis in pregnancy.
