Meghan Markle Recalls Feeling 'So Uncomfortable' As A Working Royal, And Finding The Safety She Craved In A New York Bookstore

The Duchess of Sussex reflected on one particular moment back in 2019, one year before she and the Duke of Sussex officially stepped down as working royals, referencing how she found the safety she craved inside a New York bookstore.

According to Fox News Digital, the American Riviera Orchard founder recalled how she tried to remain undetected when she travelled to New York from London to watch her friend Serena Williams play in the U.S. Open, and snuck into a bookstore wearing a cap.

"For me, sneaking to New York five years ago was a really big deal," Meghan said in her speech.

"I was still so uncomfortable being out in the world," she continued, in reference to the constant media attention that she and Prince Harry were getting as senior members of the royal family, adding: "The safety of what I was craving, I knew I could find in a bookstore."

According to the Daily Mail, Meghan then went on to thank Godmothers founders Rudolph Walsh and Victoria Jackson "for holding the space for so many people to feel seen through the pages, either in laughter, in grief, in feeling less alone."
